Announcements:
- Announced 3/15/2007: The finalized grades have been posted. Please reread your syllabus and the grade explanation for a review of how your grade was computed. I have been more than fair with my adjustment of the grade scale.
- The current median grade is 3.0
- The final exam median was 84 out of 100. The average was 79 out of 100.
- Announced 3/9/2007: I have been able to track down one set of solutions to an old exam and the department will let me post them. Here are the solutions for the Spring 2006 exam. Also here are some additional practice problems from the Ch. 14/15 material posted by the other instructor and their solutions.
- Announced 3/6/2007: Here are my review notes from class. Since the files are scanned documents, they are large. So I broke them into three separate documents:
- Announced 3/5/2007: Solutions to old final exams will not be made available (the department does not like to have old final exam solutions posted since sometimes the exams are used for night classes or distance degrees). However, you still should take time to work through them and you should come to the MSC, quiz section, and lecture ready to ask questions. In addition, you should work through the midterms from the other instructor this term (Julia Pevtsova). Here are her exams:
- Announced 3/1/2007: The Week 10 review of 15.3 and 15.4 is up. I will post one more review for 15.5 and that will be it.
- Announced 2/27/2007: The Week 9 review of 15.1 and 15.2 is up and ready for you to look at. In addition, here are some hints for homework 8.
- Announced 2/27/2007: The Exam 2 Solutions have been posted. Note that on 4(c), t = 'negative square root of 2' is not officially a solutions because t is greater than or equal to zero. However, I gave full credit even if this solution was included.
- Announced 2/25/2007: The week 8 review is ready.
- Announced 2/23/2007: Please note that significant changes to the last homework assignment have been made. Please look at the homework schedule to see the updated homework list.
- Announced 2/20/2007: Here is a copy of my Exam 2 review lecture notes that I will use on Wednesday. Please come prepared to ask questions on Wednesday.
- Announced 2/13/2007: Here are a few links to answer for some of the exams and quizzes (the quizzes give good practice with working with lines, planes and surfaces in 3D. If you are having trouble with 3D surfaces it might help to quiz yourself by looking at Quiz 4a):
- Announced 2/15/2007: The Week 7 Review/Homework Guide is ready for your perusing.
- Announced 2/13/2007: There is a typo on the formula for the normal component of acceleration in my Week 6 review. The normal component is a number not a vector. The top of fraction should read |r'(t) x r''(t)| (in other words you should compute the magnitude of the cross product).
- Announced 2/12/2007: The homework for the next two weeks has changed. Please see the updated homework schedule.
- Announced 2/9/2007: I have posted some hints to 13.3/49 and 13.4/38. Please look through them to help you with these problems.
- Announced 2/8/2007: The Week 6 Review/Homework Guide is ready for your perusing.
- Announced 2/1/2007: The Week 5 Review/Homework Guide is posted. I hope you find it useful.
- Announced 1/31/2007: The current gradebook has been posted. Please read the announcements carefully. If you have a question about recorded scores, please talk to your TA. If you have questions about your grade please talk to me (however, please do not bombard me with questions via email, it is better to talk in person). Read the announcements carefully before coming to me with questions.
- Announced 1/30/2007: The solutions for Exam 1 are posted. If you have questions about your grading, write a brief (a most 2 sentences) explanation of your question and bring me your exam and your question. I will carefully review your question and I will review your entire exam. However, be aware that I will only change a grade in extreme and obvious circumstances. Do not try to argue your way to a better grade! It is insulting and one of my biggest pet peeves.
- Announced 1/30/2007: For a more in depth discussion of the different types of quadric surfaces, please go to the following website: http://www.math.umn.edu/~rogness/quadrics/.
- Announced 1/28/2007: Please read the following supplement to Worksheet 4 before going to quiz section on Thurday.
- Announced 1/27/2007: I have posted the review/homework guide for Week4. I hope you find these useful. If you do, please advertise them to your classmates. It is sometimes difficult for me to find the time to put them together, so I want to get the most use out of them that I can.
- Announced 1/26/2007: I have eliminated two problems from the homework schedule that is in the syllabus. You do not have to do 12.6/#47 and 10.1/#33. However, I still suggest you look at these problems for extra practice.
- Announced 1/25/2007: I have posted some supplemental reading about planes and lines. I have also posted some old worksheets from previous quarters that help explain hyperbolas and ellipses. You are not required to turn any of this in, but I encourage you to look through this material to help you better understand 3 dimensional objects.
- Announced 1/24/2007: On the TaylorSeriesInClassExample.pdf, someone pointed out to me that the third, fourth and fifth derivatives have obvious errors in their computation. This does not change the prosess, but it does change the values of M and the errors. I encourage you to correctly compute the third, fourth, and fifth derivatives and find the resulting errors.
- Announced 1/23/2007: Based on the various questions I have received about Taylor Series, here is a rather long example that illustrates several of the main concepts and types of questions. I will discuss various parts of this example in class on Wednesday depending on time. This is a copy of a handwritten document so it may take longer to load than my other reviews. As always, please contact me if you see any typos or errors.
- Announced 1/19/2007: Several students have asked about answers for old exams. I expect you to work through these problems on your own and use quiz section, tutoring center, and office hours to get your questions answer. However, here are a few links to answer for some of the exams:
- Announced 1/17/2007: The other Math 126 instructor has posted addition practice problems for exam 1. Remember if you want to check your work, you need to start studying early and then you should come into the math study center, clue, quiz section, or my office hours early next week to ask questions.
- Announced 1/16/2007: The scheduled plan for Thursday, January 18 has changed. Please print off and bring the Exam 1 Practice problems. In addition, you should work through Worksheet 3 on your own time to help you better understand vectors and three dimensional coordinates.
- Announced 1/14/2007: The review/homework guide for Week 3 is currently up. Exam 1 is Thursday, Jan. 25. It will cover TN 1-5 and 12.1-12.4. All necessary review material is currently up. So start the next homework assignment early and begin studying for the exam.
- Announced 1/12/2007: There is a typo in the last example of page 3 of my Week 2 review. The last line should say "10k+2" instead of "10k+1".
- Announced 1/11/2007: Please note that I have posted some homework hints for assignment 2 at the right of this page. Please check them out.
- Announced 1/7/2007: The homework schedule for the first three weeks has been changed. Please read look at the updated homework list.
- Announced 1/1/2007: You need to print off and bring the appropriate worksheets to your Thursday quiz sections. The first worksheets can be found here. You can also get to the course worksheets by going to my course calendar, which can be found at the right of this page.
- Announced 12/16/2006: Welcome to Math 126. This webpage contains the course syllabus, the homework schedule, a course calendar and links to Math 126 material. Throughout the quarter I will also be posting review sheets and announcements. Please check back regularly.
- For now, I suggest you pick up the required texts which include:
