Announcements for Math 308 D and E, Spring 2012
- June
8: Solutions for the final. I am only posting version B; version A had the same
problems, but in a different order.
- May
24: Final Review: Friday
June 1st, 3-6pm, SMI 211.
- May
15: The Quiz 2 material consists of chapters 5.1, 5.3,
3.6, and 7.3 (orthogonal bases, Gram-Schmidt, linear
transformations, and least squares).
-
May 15: The Calendar
has been updated to reflect the fact that we will be spending
more time on Determinants.
- April
23: For the Midterm,
you will be allowed to bring a double-sided, A4 (8.5x11) sheet
of paper with handwritten
notes (a "cheat sheet").
- April
23: The Midterm
Review will be held in
SMI 211
(Tuesday May 1st, 3-6pm). You will be allowed to bring an A4
(8.5x11) sheet of paper with handwritten
notes (a "cheat sheet").
- April
20: Solutions for the quiz: version
A, version B. Unfortunately, I scanned them in
reverse page order!

- April
11: Due to time constraints, we could not cover elementary matrices in
class. Please read about them in the book (end of chapter 3.3).
We will state, but not prove, the Fundamental Theorem of
Invertible Matrices in class on Friday.
- April
9: Quiz 1 is on material from the first two
weeks only.
- April
2: For HW 1, problem
14, the format of the answer implies that you need to
consider "x" as your free parameter. This becomes a lot easier
if you cycle your variables; instead of (x,y,z) think of
(y,z,x), rewrite the equations, bring to echelon form, set x=t,
solve for y and z, and then extract the constants from the
answer vector and factor out the "t" in what remains. (Hint:
since x=t, what is the first number you will need to enter in
WebAssign?...)
- April 2: The date for Quiz 2 was
mistakenly listed on the main course website as May 25th; the
correct date is May 18, and I have made the correction.
- March 27: The Office Hour on
Monday has been pushed to 1:20
- 2:20pm, in PDL C-342. The Tuesday Office Hours at the
MSC (1:30-3:30pm) will take place in CMU B-014B, the small room located to the right
as you walk in.
- March
26: Introductory class. The Course Outline was distributed
on the first day. Check out the Calendar,
which will be updated as we go along.
