The course will cover primarily parts of chapters 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, and 8.
If time permits, we will also discuss parts of chapters 7 and 9.EXAMS: There will be two exams given during the quarter. Each will
count 20% of your grade. They will be announced at least one
week in advance. The final exam will count 40% of your grade.
HOMEWORK: There will be weekly homework assignments which will
usually be assigned each Monday and collected the following
Monday. Some of these problems will be graded. Others may
be corrected, but not graded. The homework will count 20%
of your grade. The homework assignments can be found here.SPECIAL PROBLEMS: These are optional problems which will be stated in
the lectures. There may be 7 or 8 such problems during the quarter.
They will be more challenging than the homework problems and
can add significantly to your course grade. If you work on these
problems, you must do so without assistance from anyone else.
Please do not discuss the solutions or answers with anyone else.
Solutions can be turned in repeatedly if they need to be corrected.
Please turn in solutions separately from the homework.
The special problems can be found here.
Note: If a student does not do most of these problems during the
quarter, then the maximum possible course grade will be 3.5.
