Park City Math Institute program for HS teachers has WA connections

High School and Middle School Teachers are invited to apply to the High School Teacher Program of the IAS/Park City Mathematics Institute (PCMI). The dates for PCMI 2005 are June 26 - July 15. The application deadline (except for the MSP project mentioned below) is February 15.

PCMI offers an outstanding program for High School teachers that has a number of Washington connections that continue beyond the three-week summer session in Park City, Utah.

The PCMI High School Teachers program (HSTP) takes place in a rich environment of six programs for about 250 mathematicians and math educators. The teachers in HSTP spend their mornings in a problem-based math course and a course devoted to reflection on teaching practices. In the afternoons, teachers will work in small project teams on topics such as teaching with data, Japanese lesson study, combinatorics, geometry and functions. In addition there are extra guest presentations, problem sessions, model-building and lots of conversations.

The days are full and busy, but there is time on the Wednesday afternoons off and the weekends to enjoy the mountain surroundings and pleasant weather of Park City, as well as restaurants and cultural attractions.

The Washington connections with PCMI are several. Northwest Mathematics Interaction is a PCMI affiliate founded by Washington PCMI alumni; NWMI organizes workshops and offers a varied one-week program in August on the University of Washington campus. A new connection with PCMI is an NSF Math Sciences Partnership (MSP) project with Seattle Public Schools. In addition, several of the PCMI summer staff and organizers are from Washington state and take part in these local activities.

Support for teachers who are admitted to PCMI covers all normal expenses. Travel, lodging and some meals are provided directly by PCMI, and a meal allowance and modest stipend should cover the rest with a bit to spare. Also, 6 quarter credits of University of Washington credit for Math 497 are provided at a total cost of a $166.
