Final Exam Information:

Your final exam will be held over two days:

• Thursday, August 22, in Quiz section: problems from the newest material (exponential functions, logarithms, simple and compound interest, annuities, loans and amortization)
• Friday, August 23, in Lecture: problems from earlier in the quarter (graphical and algebraic methods involving rates of change and revenue/cost/profit, supply and demand, linear programming)

Bring:

• photo ID;
• a scientific (non-graphing) calculator;
• a clear plastic ruler;
• one sheet of hand-written notes.
  
  Note Sheet Guidelines:
  • You may write on both sides of the paper.
  • One sheet means one sheet. Two pages stapled or taped together is not one sheet even if you only write on one side of each page.
  • Hand-written means that everything on the note sheet is written by hand. There should be nothing photo-copied or computer-generated on your sheet of notes.
  • Using an inappropriate note-sheet is a form of academic misconduct.

To prepare for the exam, I suggest the following:

• Read this advice to students. There's advice about preparing for exams near the end.
• Start studying several days in advance of the exam.
• Read through your lecture notes a few times. Begin making your sheet of notes as you do this. Include definitions, formulas, and big ideas.
• Look over these Reviews study guides.
  • Review for Exam I
  • Review for Exam II
  • Review for Final
• Make sure that you've done every assigned homework problem and you understand why your solution is correct. Re-work any homework problems that you found difficult the first time through.
• Re-do all group activities and test prep questions from quiz section.
• Work as many problems as you can from old exams. You can find several old exams and a collection of review problems at the Math 111 Review Materials Website. Practice working these problems like you would if you were taking a test: use only your sheet of notes and use the answers only to check your work. (Working backwards from the answer is not a useful skill to develop.) Do as many problems as you can stand. Practice, practice, practice!

Textbook Information:

You are NOT required to purchase a hard copy of the text.

You MAY purchase a custom, loose-leaf edition of the text, listed as Applied Mathematics for Business, by Harshbarger/Reynolds at the University Book Store. (We'll use Chapters 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 for Math 111 and the remaining chapters for Math 112.) The text comes bundled with an access code for Webassign, the online homework system that we use for this course. (Our text is a customized version of Mathematical Applications for the Management, Life, and Social Sciences, tenth edition, by Harshbarger/Reynolds. Full versions of the text may be found for sale on-line but they tend to be much more expensive.)

If you do not want to purchase a hard copy of the text, you may purchase an electronic copy of the text, along with access to Webassign through the following link for $65: http://www.cengagebrain.com/shop/isbn/9781285181813. This is the only way to get the UW price of $65 for two quarters of Webassign and the electronic copy of the text.

Whether you use the hard copy or electronic copy of the text, all students must have a Webassign access code. Webassign offers a two-week grace period during which you may access your homework without entering an access code. Your access code will work for both Math 111 and Math 112.

During the first few weeks of the quarter, the homework will cover material that is not in the text. You will need to download this Supplementary Reading to learn about this material. (You are not required to have a paper copy of this material.)

• a scientific calculator---non-graphing, non-programmable---see FAQ for suggested models;
• graphs for the homework from the Supplementary Reading (print these out and use them to do your homework);
• graphs that go with lectures (print these out and bring them to lecture).
