Youth Instructor (Math)
Upward Bound Summer Program (Seattle University)
Position Duties
The Upward Bound program provides fundamental support to high school aged
students in their preparation for college entrance. Classes will be taught
to high school youth ranging from 9th to 12th graders in the Upward Bound
Summer Program (June - August 2008).
- Develop course outlines, objectives and lesson plans for assigned
classes using multi-cultural materials.
- Evaluate and record student academic progress and attendance; confer
with students and other staff, maintain an open and positive
relationship as appropriate to provide guidance and to encourage student
achievement.
- Attend and participate in all required staff meetings, student field
trips, and other activities deemed necessary by the Program Director in
order to accomplish the objective of the program.
- Conduct students’ academic assessment tests.
- Partial supervision of assigned classroom teaching assistant.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in subject area appropriate to assignment.
- Washington State Certification to teach in secondary school is
required and/or college teaching/instruction experience.
- One year experience teaching students from diverse cultural and
economic backgrounds, preferably at the secondary school level (other
teaching experience will be evaluated for comparability).
- Pass a criminal background check.
Desired Qualifications
Excellent communication skills, both oral and written; ability to deal
with students in a positive and confident manner; creative
problem-solving skills; ability to handle crises effectively; ability to
develop and teach multi-cultural curriculum; ability to work as part of
a team; experience in teaching from an interdisciplinary perspective.
