Required Tests

Scores for all required tests must be sent by Educational Testing Service (ETS) to the University of Washington using the institution code 4854. Use also, the Math department code 0703 for the GRE score and the Math department code 72 for the TOEFL score.

Graduate Record Exams (GRE) General Test: All applicants except those holding earned doctorates from accredited U.S. institutions must submit scores for the GRE General Test—verbal, quantitative, and analytical writing (or, if the test was taken before October 2002, verbal, quantitative, and analytical).

Graduate Record Exams (GRE) Subject Test: The GRE Subject Test in Mathematics is required for PhD applicants, and is recommended for Master's applicants.

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL):  Any applicant for admission who is not a citizen of the United States, Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom must submit a TOEFL score, unless the applicant has a bachelor's or advanced degree from an accredited institution in one of the countries listed above. The TOEFL score must be no more than two years old.  The TOEFL may be taken in any of three formats: the internet-based TOEFL (TOEFL iBT),  the computer-based TOEFL, and the written TOEFL. We strongly recommend the TOEFL iBT, which includes a test of spoken English.

To be considered for admission to the Mathematics Department,  you must score at least 45 on the Reading, Listening, and Writing components of the TOEFL iBT, or at least 580 on the written TOEFL,  or at least 237 on the computer version, To be considered for financial support, we prefer to see scores of at least 100 (TOEFL iBT), 600  (written TOEFL), or 250 (computer TOEFL ) ,

Test of Spoken English (TSE): Because all financial support offers include teaching assistantships, it is important for us to be able to evaluate the spoken English proficiency of applicants for admission with financial support. Applicants who are not citizens of the US, Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, or the United Kingdom are strongly encouraged to take the TOEFL iBT, which has a Speaking component, or to submit scores on the Test of Spoken English (TSE)  offered by the Educational Testing Service. For more information, see International Applicants.
