Math 503A
Teaching Mathematics at the College Level

Judith Arms and Ginger Warfield

Spring 2003, Tuesday/Thursday 2:00-3:30

This course will continue some aspects of the PFF program. The primary student activity will be a series of visits to a non-UW college (2 or 4 year) math department. Each student will work with a (non-UW) host faculty member, observing and discussing classes and other aspects of the host's job. (Minimum three visits, each visit to include both class observations and discussion with the host.)

Students will write reports on their observations from visits to the other campuses. The course also will involve readings and discussions on various issues related to teaching mathematics at the college level at a variety of institutions. Texts will include the Boston College Mathematics Case Studies. Departmental visitors such as those here for the Community College Educators Sabbatical Program will be invited to participate in some sessions of the course.

In order to arrange for hosts at the visited institutions, the instructors would appreciate your letting them know if you are considering taking this course. If possible, e-mail your intentions to Judith Arms arms@math.washington.edu by the middle of winter quarter.
