This is a three-quarter sequence covering first-year graduate algebra,
with a view toward preparing students to take the preliminary exam in that
subject. Topics covered will include group actions, representation
theory, commutative and noncommutative ring theory, module theory, and
elementary algebraic geometry. I will use the text Abstract Algebra by
Dummit and Foote, but will certainly not follow it page by page; in
particular, I will present some topics not included in that book.
