Algebraic Topology
Steve Mitchell
Autumn/Winter/Spring 2004-2005, Monday/Wednesday/Friday 2:30-3:20
Prerequisites: Manifolds 544-5-6, Algebra 504-5-6. If
you don't have these prerequisites but believe you are ready for this
course, please see me.
Text: Algebraic Topology, by Allen Hatcher, is our
main text. Further references will be named later.
Course Description: Roughly, the topics to be covered
are:
- Fall: CW-complexes and homology
- Winter: Cohomology
- Spring: Homotopy theory, possibly including topics not in the above
text, such as spectral sequences.
See the text to get a better idea. I want to avoid getting bogged down
in endless construction of machinery; the lectures will focus more on
ideas, examples, applications and scenic excursions. Hatcher's text is
well-suited to this approach, with many interesting examples, problems,
and "additional topics".
