Toric varieties are a good source of examples for anyone learning algebraic
geometry or combinatorics. This special type of algebraic variety has an
interpretation in terms of cone decompositions and lattice polytopes. Due
to this close relation to combinatorics, all of the basic concepts of
algebraic geometry are easily computable.
