Students and faculty in the Mathematics
Department have offices in Padelford
Hall overlooking Lake Washington and the Cascades, with a view of Mount
Rainier to the southeast. The mathematics lounge, where afternoon tea is
served daily, is a convenient meeting place for faculty and students.
The
Mathematics Research Library, located in the same building, has an
outstanding collection of over 47,000 volumes in mathematics and statistics,
and subscribes to more than 500 serials. In addition, separate collections
in applied mathematics, computer science, and physics are available at
other nearby libraries on campus. All of the important on-line databases
are available by computer from any location on campus, including MathSciNet's
on-line reviews of mathematics research papers and an ever-growing number
of journals whose full text is available on the Internet.
The department has its own dedicated computing facilities in
Padelford, built around high performance file and compute servers
connected to more than 100 workstations, running Windows, RedHat
Linux, or Macintosh OS. The department supports a full range of
software, including Maple, Mathematica, Matlab, Splus, TeX, and
Microsoft Office. Every grad student office is equipped with a
workstation directly connected to the department's network and to the
Internet.
