Graduate Study In Mathematics
Welcome to the UW Math Department

The University of Washington, one of the premier research universities in the United States, offers a strong, demanding program of graduate study in mathematics. The department consists of about 60 permanent faculty, several postdocs, temporary and visiting faculty, together with approximately 75 PhD students, 10 Master's students, and 245 undergraduate majors. Faculty research interests span nearly every major area of mathematics, from algebraic number theory to numerical analysis. UW graduates work as faculty members in research universities around the world, as applied mathematicians in major corporations and government labs, and as teachers in two-year and four-year colleges.

Students, faculty, and visitors interact through a variety of courses, seminars, and regional conferences, as well as in other less formal ways. The faculty have been supported in their research by the Sloan Foundation, National Science Foundation, Fulbright Foundation, US Navy, National Security Agency, and other organizations. Most graduate students are fully supported through a combination of teaching assistantships, research assistantships, and fellowships, including several Sloan Foundation Dissertation Fellowships awarded in recent years. Visits by distinguished mathematicians from all over the world are supported by a number of sources, including the Milliman Fund, a University of Washington Mathematics Department endowment. Interdisciplinary activities are supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation's VIGRE program for integration of research and education in the Math, Applied Math, and Statistics departments.
