We consider a first-order system in the plane. A scattering theory for this system was developed by Beals and Coifman, Fokas and Ablowitz and others. We will describe how the scattering transform for this system arises in the study of the inverse conductivity problem and in the study of one of the Davey-Stewartson systems.
