Nonlinear PDEs @ IMPA

The field of nonlinear partial differential equations has experienced a striking evolution over the last fifteen years in Brazil. The number of PhD's and students has increased creating a critical mass. In this process it is fundamental to have a scientific interchange with researchers leaders in the field. The aim of the workshop is to continuing this process by allowing the community to attend to lectures of recent and important progress in the field delivered by renowned specialists. The workshop will bring together leading experts in nonlinear dispersive equations and nonlinear hyperbolic systems of conservation laws. Graduate students and young PhD's are encouraged to participate of this meeting.

Mathematical Modeling in Industry XII: A Workshop for Graduate Students

The IMA is holding a 10-day workshop on Mathematical Modeling in Industry. The workshop is designed to provide graduate students and qualified advanced undergraduates with first hand experience in industrial research.

Students will work in teams of up to 6 students under the guidance of a mentor from industry. The mentor will help guide the students in the modeling process, analysis and computational work associated with a real-world industrial problem. A progress report from each team will be scheduled during the period. In addition, each team will be expected to make an oral final presentation and submit a written report at the end of the 10-day period.

Algebraic and Geometric Deformation Spaces

This workshop is a continuation of the workshop "Hochschild and Cyclic (co-)homology and Applications to Geometry and Physics" held at the Max Planck Institute in July 2007. This year still focuses on algebraic and geometric structures related to physically motivated algebraic topology and non-commutative geometry, with particular regard to their deformation theoretic properties. We plan to have a few lecture series followed by talks in the afternoon sessions. Selected lecture notes from talks and lecture series will also appear in the proceedings of this workshop.

Dynamics of Infectious Diseases

New and reemerging infectious diseases pose a rising global health threat. In the light of increasing international trade, intensified human traffic, an imminent influenza A pandemic, and wide spread antibiotic resistance of pathogens a quantitative understanding of the dynamics of infectious disease spread is of fundamental importance and acute. The main purpose of this four-week program is to bring together scientists from different disciplines (physics, mathematics, biology ecology, epidemiology, population genetics, computational modeling) to work on the spread and evolution of infectious diseases in order to advance new concepts and ideas in the field of epidemiology. It aims to take a trans-disciplinary view on the dynamics and evolution of infectious diseases from molecular mechanisms, pathogen-host interactions to population biology of epidemics. The format is intended to promote maximal discussion and interaction. Our goal is to provide a forum for active cross-communication between experimentalists and theoreticians from diverse disciplines with an aim towards illuminating outstanding challenges in the field of infectious disease research and proposing new concepts for addressing them. Cornerstone topics of the workshop will be:

  • Spatio-temporal dynamics of infectious diseases
  • Host-Pathogen interaction
  • Evolution of pathogens
