13th Brazilian School of
Probability
The school is intended as a forum to discuss new developments in
probability and related areas, an occasion to detect new directions
of research and to establish new collaborations and an opportunity
for the students to begin their scientific life.
This is the 13th edition of the school. By a happy coincidence, in
2009, São Paulo's probability seminar will be 31 years old.
This year the school will take place in Maresias, a beautiful place
between the ocean and the rain forest, located in São Sebastião, in
the state of São Paulo.
To celebrate this 31st birthday we will make an special effort to
have the scientific subjects we have been working all these years,
from interacting particle systems to the statistical analysis of
chains of infinite order, discussed in the school.

2009 NSF-CBMS
Regional Research Conferences in the Mathematical Sciences:
Algebraic Topology in Applied Mathematics
This CBMS Conference on Algebraic Topology in Applied Mathematics
will present 10 lectures by Robert Ghrist focusing on very recent
applications of algebraic topology and its methods to problems in
modern technological areas. Specific applications include (1)
coverage problems in sensor networks; (2) sensor fusion and data
aggregation over networks; (3) statistics of (large) data sets with
coarse (or coordinate-free) geometric correlation; (4)
synchronization and consensus of systems; (5) robot motion planning
and coordination; and (6) rigorous interpretation of experimental
dynamics. Many of these problems are imperative systems–engineering
challenges of direct impact in security, defense, manufacturing, and
commerce.
The series will be structured in a manner that prepares students
with regards to the algebraic topology, the various direct
applications, and, most importantly, the global perspectives that
will allow and encourage students to find new applications.

NSF PASI Summer Program in Commutative Algebra and its Connections to Geometry, honoring Wolmer V. Vasconcelos
The two week program will consist of seven mini-courses during the
first week and advanced research talks during the second week. The
courses will bring junior researchers up-to-speed in the more
specialized topics that will be the focus of the advanced lectures
and will contribute to the training of young researchers from North
and South America in a timely atmosphere of international
collaboration.
Week One, Advanced School: August 3-7, 2009
The school is aimed at mathematicians from the Americas at the
peridoctoral stage. Their participation is supported through funds
made available by the NSF, via the PASI program.
Week Two, International Workshop: August 10-14, 2009
The international workshop will showcase recent developments in
commutative algebra, emphasizing connections to algebraic geometry,
computer algebra and combinatorics.

Summer School on Seismic Imaging
In exploration or reflection seismology, seismic imaging creates
images of the Earth's upper crust using seismic waves generated by
artificial sources and recorded into extensive arrays of sensors
(geophones or hydrophones). The technology is based on a complex,
and rapidly evolving, mathematical theory that employs advanced
solutions to a wave equation as tools to solve the general seismic
inverse problem. The economic need for better images fuels research
into improved imaging methods.
The workshop will consist of several minicourses addressing a broad
range of theoretical and practical issues arising in seismic imaging
including the use of curvelets and other frames in seismic imaging,
compressed sensing applied to seismic imaging, velocity estimation
and inverse wave imaging. Each minicourse will consist of 3 one hour
lectures. There will be computer labs associated with the lectures.

International Symposium on Mathematical Programming
This symposium marks the 60th anniversary of the Zeroth Symposium
organized by the Cowles Commission at the University of Chicago in
June, 1949. The meeting will be held at the University of Chicago's
Gleacher Center and the Marriott Downtown Chicago Magnificent Mile
Hotel. Planned festivities include the opening session in Orchestra
Hall at Chicago's Symphony Center, the conference banquet at the
Field Museum, and a celebration of the 60th anniversary of the
Zeroth Symposium.

Workshop for Young Researchers in Mathematical Biology
The workshop is intended to broaden the scientific perspective of
young researchers in mathematical biology and to encourage the
interactions with other scientists. Workshop activities include
plenary talks and poster sessions, as well as group discussions on
issues relevant to mathematical biologists. Several abstracts will
be chosen for short talks as well as to be presented as a poster. We
cordially invite young mathematical biologists to participate.
Application Deadline (extended): May 1, 2009

Matter and Electromagnetic Fields in Strong Gravity
The goal of this workshop is to bring together selected experts in
this field, and facilitate both formal and informal discussions that
cut across the traditional boundaries of X-ray astronomy, radio
astronomy, accretion theory, gravity theory, numerical relativity
and gravitational wave astrophysics. Specific topics to be addressed
include: (1) theory and observations of black hole accretion disks,
(2) future tests of strong gravity, (3) plasma physics in curved
spacetime, (4) interaction of dynamical spacetime with matter and
fields.

Workshop on Energy-Driven Systems The role of energy is
fundamental in driving dynamics and structure in a spectrum of
models from materials science, fluid mechanics, and mathematical
biology. This workshop will address a variety of aspects of complex
energy-driven systems, ranging from fundamental questions of
mathematical analysis to modeling and computer simulation.
Researchers using a variety of tools (analysis of PDE, calculus of
variations, stochastic analysis, numerical simulation) will have an
opportunity to interact and exchange ideas. Furthermore, the
workshop will present an opportunity for young researchers to learn
about the exciting advances in this rapidly developing field.
Graduate students or scientists with a recent Ph.D. degree are
encouraged to contribute a presentation or poster for this workshop.
The deadline for submission of contributed abstracts and
financial aid is June 1, 2009.
