Canadian Number Theory Association X Meeting

The Canadian Number Theory Association (CNTA) was founded in 1987 at the International Number Theory Conference at Laval University. The purpose of the CNTA is to enhance and promote learning and research in Number Theory, particularly in Canada. To advance these goals the CNTA organizes major international conferences, with the aim of exposing Canadian students and researchers to the latest developments in number theory. The previous meetings have been held in Banff (1988), Vancouver (1989), Kingston (1991), Halifax (1994), Ottawa (1996), Winnipeg (1999), Montreal (2002) and Toronto (2004) and Vancouver (2006). These have been high quality conferences which have had wide participation of the international number theory community.

The conference will contain 12 plenary lectures, including a talk given by the winner of the 2008 Ribenboim Prize (an award for distinguished research in number theory), and a Public Lecture open to the general public. Plenary lectures are 45 minutes in length, and our emphasis will be on analytic number theory, arithmetic geometry, and their fruitful interactions developed in recent years.

IPAM/CCB Summer School: Mathematics in Brain Imaging

This two-week intensive workshop will focus on mathematical techniques applied to brain images to measure, map and model brain structure and function. Topics will range from modeling anatomical structures in MRI scans, and mapping connectivity in diffusion tensor images, to statistical analysis of functional brain images from fMRI, EEG, and MEG. Current applications in radiology and neuroscience will be highlighted, as will new directions in the mathematics of structural and functional image analysis. In the second week on Functional Brain Mapping, a series of lectures on diffusion tensor imaging will discuss mathematics and tools for registration, segmentation, fiber tracking and connectivity modeling in tensor and “beyond-tensor” (high-angular resolution) diffusion images, using metrics on Riemannian manifolds. Software implementing a wide range of algorithms will be demonstrated; tutorial notes will be provided. Talks will interest newcomers as well as experts in the field. Morning lectures on the principles behind the methods; afternoon lectures will go in-depth into applications.

PIMS Workshop: Stochastic and Probabilistic Methods for Atmosphere, Ocean, and Climate Dynamics

This PIMS workshop is intended for graduate students, post-docs, and young researchers in applied math and atmosphere/ocean sciences who are interested in the application of stochastic and probabilistic modelling and analysis techniques for atmosphere/ocean dynamics.

The air of this PIMS workshop is to bring together university based scientists and operational modelers working on or using stochastic and/or probalistic models in atmospheric, oceans and climate dynamics and to foster new interactions and learn from each other.

Graduate students, post-docs, and young researchers are especially encouraged to attend.

Financial aid and accommodation will be provided for eligible students and post-docs. The deadline for application is May 15, 2008.

Summer Institute in Cardiovascular Genetic Epidemiology

The primary objective of the Summer Institute in Cardiovascular Genetic Epidemiology is to provide all-expense-paid training and mentoring in genetic epidemiology of cardiovascular diseases and risk factors to junior-level faculty and scientists from minority groups that are under-represented in the sciences and/or with a disability, so that they can competently and effectively develop independent research programs on cutting edge Heart, Lung, Blood, and Sleep (HLBS) disorders. This initiative to bring faculty and scientists particularly from minority groups into research of cardiovascular disease (CVD) is important because of the major public health burden of these diseases, especially in minority populations.

This Summer Institute program was designed to provide a working knowledge and appreciation for genetic epidemiology and bioinformatics methods and to integrate these skills with the Mentee’s substantive research interests in CVD and HLBS problems. It will (1) require participation in 3-week summer institutes during each of two summers, (2) attending a 3-day mid-year meeting, and (3) involve long-term networking with a Mentor to advance one's own research career.

Career Mentoring Workshop for Women

The Career Mentoring Workshop (CaMeW) is a 3-day annual workshop for women who are entering their final year in graduate school in mathematics. The workshop aims to educate women on the job search process in a setting that allows them to form relationships with other women in mathematics. The goals of this conference are for each participant to come away from the workshops with a good understanding of the process of finding a job and mentors on whom she can call over the next year as well as a group of peers from across the nation who can provide additional support.

Fifteen participants will be invited to Wheaton College, MA for the workshop to be held July 27-29, 2008. Five junior faculty members from various academic institutions will mentor participants throughout the workshop. The mentors are women who have recently finished their own PhDs and who now work in academia. These women will share their experiences of finishing their degrees and navigating the job search.

The key components of the workshop are:

  • Presentations by junior mathematics faculty on topics such as balancing finishing the dissertation with the job search, deciphering job ads, preparing application materials and interviewing
  • Working session on application materials
  • Mathematical talks by participants on their dissertation research
  • Interaction with senior mathematics faculty from the Boston-area
  • A keynote address by a senior female mathematician who has been involved with mentoring women in mathematics throughout her career

2008 Summer Conference on General Topology and Its Applications

The First Summer Conference was held in 1982 in New York City and the last one took place in Castellon, Spain in 2007 with more than 200 participants.

The Conference will consist of 7 invited talks, contributed talks of 25 minutes in parallel sessions and workshops on Continuum Theory and Applied Topology. All areas of topology-related mathematics especially general/set theoretic topology, continuum theory, geometric topology, and applications of topology to other areas of mathematics and the sciences, especially in theoretical computer science, will be covered.
