Mathematics Courses Related To The Actuarial Examinations

The following information is provided for students who intend to take the Actuarial Examinations and want to know what courses might provide an adequate background. Note: In all cases, the correlation is only approximate. Students should obtain the texts and study notes suggested by the Actuarial Society for the given examination and review their relevant parts before taking the examination. Course Exam 1 - Mathematical Foundations of Actuarial Science
This exams looks for a knowledge of fundamental mathematical tools for quantitatively assessing risk. The application of these tools to problems encountered in actuarial science is emphasized. This exams includes calculus and topics in probability. A basic knowledge of insurance and risk management is required. Recommended coursework: Math 124, 125, 126 Calculus; Math 394 Probability.

Course Exam 2 - Interest Theory, Economics and Finance
This exam covers interest theory (discrete and continuous, intermediate microeconomics and macroeconomics and the fundamentals of finance. It assumes a basic knowledge of calculus and probability. Recommend coursework: Econ 200, 201 Microeconomics and Macroeconomics, basic finance.

Course Exam 3 - Actuarial Models
A knowledge of calculus, probability and interest theory are required, along with some knowledge of risk management. Recommended coursework: Math 394 and 395 Probability and Statistics 341 and 342 Introduction to Probability and Statistical Inference

Course Exam 4 - Actuarial Modeling
An introduction to modeling, including actuarial and statistical methods used in modeling. A thorough knowledge of calculus, linear algebra, probability and mathematical statistics is required. Recommended coursework: Math 308 Linear Algebra
