Getting to the UW Mathematics Department

General Location

The University of Washington main campus is located in northeast Seattle, just north of the Ship Canal and east of Interstate 5. The central campus is bounded on the west by 15th Avenue NE, on the east by 25th Avenue and Montlake Boulevard, on the north by NE 45th Street, and on the south by NE Pacific Street. Here is a map of the city. The Mathematics Department is in Padelford Hall, at the corner of Stevens Way and Pend Oreille Road (Location O-8 on the UW Campus map). The main office is room C138, on the first floor of C wing.

Parking Information
(Click here for the UW's parking options.)

There are automobile entrances to campus on the north side (NE 45th Street at 17th Ave), west side (15th Ave NE at 40th Street), and east side (25th Ave NE just south of the 45th Street viaduct). On weekdays and Saturday mornings, the kiosks at all campus entrances will be open, and you can get an all-day visitor parking permit for $15.00 (6am-4pm, prorated refunds available) and $6.00 (4-9pm or Saturdays 7am-noon), and a free campus map. On Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings, the kiosks are closed and parking is free.

The most convenient parking for Math Department visitors is located in the Padelford parking garage (lots N16, N18, N20, and N22), just behind Padelford Hall. If you are attending a conference somewhere else on campus, it might be more convenient to park in the Central Plaza Garage, which you enter from 15th Avenue across from 41st Street; or in lot N-1 next to the Burke Museum at the northwest corner of campus. Visitors may also park in the student parking lot (E1), just east of 25th Avenue, for $6.00 cash per day. Parking in Lots E3 and E4 are $3.00 cash (quarters only in E3). All parking fees are listed here.

Arriving by Car

Take Interstate 5, but do not get on the express lanes. Exit at NE 45th Street, about 4 miles north of downtown Seattle and just north of the Ship Canal bridge. Turn east on NE 45th; you'll soon cross Roosevelt Way (which would be 10th Avenue if it had a number), 12th Ave, Brooklyn Ave (13th), and University Way (14th). After you cross 15th Ave, the university will be on your right.

From Sea-Tac Airport

By car: From the airport, follow the "Freeways" signs to State Route 518 east; you will soon start seeing signs for Interstate 5. Get on I-5 north (toward Seattle). Drive through downtown Seattle (about 15 miles), and across the Ship Canal. Exit at NE 45th Street, and follow the instructions for arriving by car above. Driving time is about 30 minutes if traffic isn't bad.

By Link Light Rail & bus: Catch Sound Transit's Link Light Rail service from Sea-Tac, located on the other side of the airport parking garage. The fare is $2.50 for adults. Ride the train to the end of the line (about 40 minutes) to Westlake Station, then catch a Metro bus #71, #72, or #73 (usually $2 fare) heading north to University Way NE & NE 41st Street. The campus is to the east (to your right), just across 15th Ave NE. (Total travel time is a little under an hour.) For exact bus times and fare info, check the King County Metro Transit trip planner.

By taxi: Look for a cab waiting outside the airport baggage claim area, or call at one of the Traveler's Information Centers. Major cab companies in Seattle are Farwest Taxi (622-1717), Graytop Cab (282-8222), North End Taxi (363-3333), and Yellow Cabs (622-6500). The fare is about $45-$50 to the University District for any number of people. Driving time is 30-45 minutes, depending on the traffic and number of passengers to be dropped off.

By shuttle van: After you get your baggage, follow the signs directing you to ground transportation, located on the 3rd floor of the parking garage. From the baggage claim level, go up one floor via escalator or elevator and walk across the sky bridge to the garage, then go back down to the 3rd floor and follow the signs to the Shuttle Express booth, alongside the ground transportation information center. The fare to the University District is $37, or somewhat less if using their direct service to the UW campus. Driving time is 30-45 minutes, depending on the traffic and number of passengers to be dropped off.

By airport express bus: Board the Gray Line Airport Express bus at either end of the airport baggage claim area, where buses leave every half hour from 5:20 AM to 11:20 PM. Get off the bus at the Westin Hotel in downtown Seattle (1900 5th Avenue), and walk a tenth of a mile southeast to Westlake Station, Bay A and transfer to Metro bus #71, #72, or #73 heading north. (Note: The station is underground and open only 5am to 7pm weekdays. All other times, transfer at Olive Way & 4th Ave.) Exit the bus at University Way NE & NE 41st Street and walk east (to your right); the campus is just across 15th Ave NE. One-way fare is $11.00 for Gray Line (tickets can be purchased at the booth next to the boarding area), plus bus fare. Travel time to UW is about 50-60 minutes, depending on your bus connection. For more info, call Gray Line at 206-626-6088 or 800-426-7532. For exact bus times and fare info, check Metro's trip planner.
