Ivan's background:
- Math was always his best and most favorite subject throughout high school. When he got to college, he found himself taking more math classes for fun. Abstract mathematics became more and more interesting, so he studied a lot of algebra and number theory. He enjoyed solving problems, which carried over well into computer science.
Advice for students:
- Mathematics isn't just about crunching numbers. It is about solving problems. The problem solving skills you gain when studying mathematics will help you in other aspects of your career. Problems in the real world rarely have straightforward solutions, much like many of the problems you face in mathematics. A solid mathematical background is beneficial, even if your career isn't doing mathematics directly.
