What they do:
- Louis designs software and writes code to automate common configuration operations done by Network Engineers and assist them with the purpose being to mitigate risk of traffic loss from customers of AWS and retail.
Math on the job:
- There isn't much math outside of and the software Louis design doesn't use any complex models. Louis the only one on his team with a degree outside of CS. In his internship at Blackberry, Louis used much more math where he created probabilistic models to categorize search queries, create user profiles, and detect misspelt queries as he was allowed to pursue my own projects more or less. Louis says a software engineering position can be hit or miss on the math front depending on the field/team that you work in.
Student's background:
- Received Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics in Autumn 2012
Advice for students:
- Take applied courses outside of the major and get an internship, even if you plan on going to graduate school. It lets you explore different career path and mathematics outside of the standard track.
