What he does:
- He attends lectures and takes exams.
Math on the job:
- He uses math extensively in every class. From the analytical and topological foundations of microeconomics to the dynamic modeling used in macroeconomics to the probability and mathematical statistics of econometrics, every aspect of his graduate education involves alot of mathematics.
Steven's background:
- Steven received a Bachelor of Science in ACMS and Economics from the University of Washington ,Spring, 2008.
- What brought Steven to mathematics was the logic of it. After taking math reasoning, he felt as if a light had been turned on, and his mode of thinking about math was altered. It felt really good.
- He found he loved the probability sequence, Math 394-395-396, as taught by Prof. Galen Shorack. Now, the stuff he learned in those classes is making graduate school much easier than it would have been otherwise.
Advice for students:
- If you think you want to go to graduate school in Economics, it is a good idea to take as much analysis and probability as you can. Also, make sure you are comfortable with linear algebra, differential equations, and linear and non-linear optimization. It is also helpful to hone your coding skills and to be familiar with MATLAB or some other mathematical software.
