What he does:
- As a graduate student Matthew spends his time teaching calculus, researching, doing homework and studying for exams.
Matthew's background:
- Matthew received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics and a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from the University of Washington, Spring 2010.
- Matthew always liked doing math and knew that he wanted to study mathematics at UW. He really struggled his first two years in his mathematics courses taking 126,307 and 308 his first year and 334,5,6 his second. He was ready to give up on going further with math, but found that he got better and better at making sense of how mathematics works.
Advice for students:
- Get to know your professors as well as you can starting right away. Even
if you know how to do the exercises it is well worth the time to talk
to your professors and TAs about mathematics.
-
Don't get frustrated if it doesn't make sense right away. It can take
years.
- If you are serious about graduate study you should definitely do
undergraduate research and try to find a professor who will work on an
independent study with you. To do this you actually need to directly
ask professors if they have suggestions for how to get involved. Don't
be afraid to get turned down.
