What she does:
- Jennifer works for a woman's shoe wholesaler. She makes sure the shoes ship correctly from their factories in China, arrive on time in Seattle, and that the product is shipped on time to stores. She also manages the inventory at the warehouse and takes customer orders. She runs reports frequently, and lets salesmen know the status of product availbility.
- Jennifer uses problem solving constantly. She also uses some of her background in optimization to efficiently move inventory into and out of the warehouse. Her background in computer science has provide a good foundation for generating reports and knowing about computer systems. Her knowledge in statistics has helped when taking inventory and determining error rates. Physics lab work provided background to help solve problems and organize what needs to be done.
Jennifer's background:
- Jennifer received a Bachelor of Science in Applied and Computational Mathematical Sciences, with a focus in engineering and physical science, from the University of Washington, Spring 2005.
- Jenni says she has enjoyed math all her life. Her third grade teacher and family were the strongest influences.
Advice for students:
- Her advice for students is to make contacts.They are everything when you are job hunting. Her current position she found through contacts from a transition job she got right after college. The shoe industry is like one big family, where everyone knows everyone. Her family has been in the apparel industry for over 20 years, and this helped her in her job search.
