What they do:
- Edwin is currently pursuing his Masters in Statistics at Virginia Tech. He plans to puruse a Ph.D. program in either economics or statistics.
Math on the job:
- Edwin applies his mathematical background to his current studies on a daily basis. Statistics is a different mathematical field, but much of what he learned as an undergrad is very helpful in understanding statistics.
Student's background:
- Edwin received a Bachelor of Science in Economics and a
Bachelor of Arts in Math from the University of Washington, Spring
2011.
- As an undergraduate, Edwin had a passion for economics and quantitative finance and wanted to pursue these two fields at a rigorous academic level. Both of these fields require a very strong command of math, especially multivariate calculus, real analysis, differential equations, and numerical methods. He chose to pursue a mathematics degree so that he could learn these skills essential to his areas of interest.
Advice for students:
- If you're looking to go to graduate school, make sure you have very good study habits and are passionate about either your subject or have a very good reason to pursue it.
- Like many people have said in the past, another advantage of pursuing a math degree is that it trains you to think in a rigorous way. This has been very valuable to Edwin in his graduate studies.
