What they do:
- Matthew is currenlty a graduate student and teaches quiz and lab sections in the Economics department at the University of Oregon.
Math on the job:
- Matthew uses math on a consistent basis while teaching undergradaute courses. Specifcally while teaching econometrics and micro and macro economics.
Student's background:
- Matthew
received a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics and a Bacehlor of Science in
Economics with a minor in Music from the University of Washington,
Summer 2010.
- Matthew has always liked the rigor and the clarity of math, where the whole is no more or less than the sum of its parts. He believes that higher level math leaves great scope for imagination and creativity, as we often have many tools to approach a problem, but there may not be a formula to tell us which one to use.
Advice for students:
- The main benefit of college is the opportunity to build critical thinking skills. You should make the most of this opportunity. Take the hardest classes you can, even if the title is intimidating or if it seems beyond your level. Sure, it will be painful, but it will pay off and after the quarter you'll be glad you did it.
