Honors and Distinction in Mathematics

Undergraduates majoring in mathematics can earn a Bachelor of Science degree with College Honors in Mathematics if they participate in the University Honors Program, or with Distinction in Mathematics if they do not. In either case, the department requirements are as follows:

1. Must complete the B.S. Mathematics Degree.
2. Must satisfactorily complete at least one three-quarter sequence 402-3-4, 424-5-6, or 441-2-3; or two two-quarter sequences from this list. Exceptions must be approved by the chair of the Departmental Honors Committee.
3. Must obtain a GPA of 3.5 or better in the mathematics courses offered for the degree.
4. Must write a senior thesis.

NOTE: The Senior Thesis now requires a student to submit a topic proposal to the Department Honors Committee no later than the end of the first week of classes the quarter preceding the quarter in which the student expects to graduate.

Please visit the Student Services Office in C-36 Padelford to pick up the complete instructions and proposal form. This a two-quarter process, so please plan ahead.

Writing a Senior Thesis

If you are not interested in the College Honors or Distinction in Mathematics, you may still write a Senior Thesis. This requires finding a faculty member whose field of interest is closely related to your own. The idea is to work under the guidance of a faculty member on a research project. More information about this is availabe in the Student Services Office, C-36 Padelford.
