Math 111/112 Course Schedule

Math 111/112 is a two-quarter sequence in which students study algebra and calculus in the context of applications from business and economics. Students must earn a grade of 2.0 in Math 111 to move on to Math 112. Both courses emphasize using multiple methods (graphical, numerical, and algebraic) to solve problems.  The problem sets require sophisticated mathematical thought and promote deep understanding of the material.

The topics of Math 111 include:

• rates of change;
• slopes of diagonal, secant, and tangent lines;
• functional notation;
• revenue, cost, and profit functions (including total revenue, marginal revenue, average revenue, total cost, marginal cost, average cost, fixed cost, variable cost, and average variable cost);
• linear and quadratic functions;
• linear programming;
  
• exponential growth;
• compound interest;
• logarithms.

The topics of Math 112 include:

• slopes of secant lines and the difference quotient;
• the derivative;
• derivative rules (including the product, quotient, and chain rules);
• multi-variable functions and partial derivatives;
• optimization;
• areas under curves;
• integrals as areas;
• the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus.
