Biostatisticians and the Prevention of HIV/AIDS

Deborah Donnell

HPTN Prevention Trials Network, SCHARP/FHCRC

Biostatisticians at SCHARP (Statistical Center for HIV/AIDS Research and Prevention), housed at The Fred Hutchinson Center, are engaged in the design, conduct and analysis of trials to evaluate the prevention of HIV/AIDS. The trials are conducted at sites in Subsaharan Africa, Asia, North and South America, with the data sent to central databases in Seattle.

I will give an overview of the challenges intrinsic in this work, illustrated by examples from the types of problems we encounter, and the skills we need to solve them.
