Terence Tao to Give Milliman Lectures

Terence Tao In December the Department will welcome Terence Tao of UCLA as the 2007-08 Milliman Lecturer. Professor Tao received the Ph.D. in 1996 at the age of 21. Last year he was awarded the Fields Medal, the highest honor in mathematics, for a remarkable body of research that includes major contributions to several diverse areas: harmonic analysis, partial differential equations, combinatorics, and number theory. Among his best-known achievements is his proof, in joint work with Ben Green, that the set of prime numbers contains arbitrarily long arithmetic progressions. In his lectures, Professor Tao will discuss this result along with other recent developments in arithmetic combinatorics.
