Announcements:
- Announced 3/9/2010: Here are the final review overheads (word document) from lecture Wednesday.
- Announced 2/19/2010: At the lower left of this page, note that the final exam time and location have been posted. Also, at the right of this page you will find the following:
- A review sheet containing more HW hints for Week 9 (WS 20, 21, and 22).
- A review sheet containing for Week 10 (WS 23 and final review). The second page of this review has a discussion/review for the final.
- In addition, I randomly pulled up an old final (Winter 2004) and wrote out complete solutions with explanations for you to use when studying.
Here are the full worked out solutions for the Winter 2004 final. ONE CORRECTION TO THESE SOLUTIONS: On Problem 4(b), the set up should have been "A(t) - B(t) = -0.045t^2 + 2.4t = distance that Car A is ahead of Car B" instead of "B(t)-A(t) = 0.045t^2 - 2.4t = distance that Car B is ahead of Car A", we still get the same answer for the vertex in both situations (so the answer doesn't change), but the set up should have been A(t)-B(t).
- Announced 2/24/2010: The current grades are now online, please read all the announcements on the grade page. The week 8 review contains an overview of WS 17, 18, and 19 and I have also posted some extra hints for the problems at the end of Worksheet 17. Here are the exam solutions (you will need to compare your numbers to figure out which version you had):
- Exam 2 Version 1 Solutions
- Exam 2 Version 2 Solutions
- The exam statistics are as follows:
- MEDIAN: 42 out of 50 (84%)
- QUARTILES: 36.6, 42, and 45 (these are the scores out of 50 that break the class into fourths)
- Thus, ONE-FOURTH OF THE CLASS GOT ABOUT 90 PERCENT ON EXAM 2, GREAT JOB! On top of that a half of the class was above 84% and three-fourths of the class was about 73%!
- The numbers clearly indicate that this was a very doable exam. So if you were in the lowest fourth of the class (below 36 out of 50), make sure to carefully analyze your study methods (and talk to your classmates) to come up with better study methods for the final.
- Since the grades were so good on exam two, there is no need to "curve", we will just use the standard gradescale which is:
- 27 out of 50 (54 percent): 0.8
- 30 out of 50 (60 percent): 1.0
- 33 out of 50 (66 percent): 1.3
- 36 out of 50 (72 percent): 1.7
- 39 out of 50 (78 percent): 2.3
- 42 out of 50 (84 percent): 2.9
- 45 out of 50 (90 percent): 3.5
- 48 out of 50 (96 percent): 4.0
- Announced 2/19/2010: At the lower left of this page, note that the final exam time and location have been posted. Also, at the right of this page you will find the following:
- Announced 2/10/2010: At the right of this page you will find the following (All of these review sheets say the same thing, but maybe you'll find one that better fits your studying style. That's why I'm giving you all three.):
- Announced 2/5/2010: At the right of this page you will find the following:
- Announced 2/3/2010: The midterm grades up through Exam 1 have been posted (The scores are listed by the last four digits of your student ID number). Please check that all the scores match your records and report any discrepancies to your TA. The Exam 1 solutions are in the previous announcement below. The exam statistics are:
- MEDIAN: 36 out of 50 (72%)
- QUARTILES: 29, 36, and 42 (these are the scores out of 50 that break the class into fourths)
- EVERYONE still has the possibility of getting a good grade (above 3.0) in this class.
- IF YOU ARE IN THE LOWEST QUARTILE (below 29 out of 50), then you should be worried because if you have another low exam score, then it will be difficult to get the necessary 2.0 to move on into Math 112. What this means is that you need to change your study habits and try some of the suggestions that I have mentioned in class, on my syllabus, and in my emails. Also make sure to stay ahead on each assignment and visit office hours regularly.
- IF YOU ARE IN THE SECOND QUARTILE (between 29 and 36 out of 50), then you should be a little worried as well because you are flirting with the necessary 2.0 to move on into Math 112. You need to adjust your study habits for Exam 2.
- IF YOU ARE IN THE THIRD QUARTILE (between 36 and 42 out of 50), then you likely misunderstood one or two concepts on the exam. Make sure to go back and fill in these holes before exam 2.
- IF YOU ARE IN THE HIGHEST QUARTILE (above 42 out of 50), then NICE WORK, but don't get complacent. The second exam tests a very different skill set. I do occasionally see students do well on the first exam and poorly on the second because they assume that they already have a good grade so they don't need to study. You need to remind yourself to study harder than before.
- The grade break down ("curve") for the first exam looks approximately like this (these are just a few points along the gradescale):
- 24 out of 50 (48 percent): 0.8
- 27 out of 50 (54 percent): 1.1
- 30 out of 50 (60 percent): 1.5
- 33 out of 50 (66 percent): 1.9
- 36 out of 50 (72 percent): 2.3
- 39 out of 50 (78 percent): 2.5
- 42 out of 50 (84 percent): 3.1
- 45 out of 50 (90 percent): 3.5
- 48 out of 50 (96 percent): 4.0
- Announced 2/1/2010: The review for week 5 (which contains some homework hints) is available at the right of the page. Your first exam will be returned on Tuesday and grades will be posted by the end of the week. Here are the exam solutions (you will need to compare your questions to figure out which version you had):
- Announced 1/21/2010: Exam 1 is Thursday, Jan. 28 in quiz section. Show up early (if you are late you will not be given additional time).
- At the right of this page, you will find a list of review sheets for each week of the course along with an Exam 1 review.
