Math 112 - Spring 2012 - Grade Record

EXPLANATION OF FINAL GRADE COMPUTATION

Below is an explanation of how your final grade is calculated. This is how a grade is computed for any class with weights for various parts of the course.

For the midterm grade, I use a modified version of this scheme where I give the exams, homework, activity and test prep the same proportion of grade as they would get all together at the end of the quarter.

Okay: Think of the course as a total of 100 points. For each category take your percentage in that category, multiply by the weight and add up your scores for your total out of 100. That's it!

CategoryWeight percentage score
Test Prep2 TEST PREP PERCENTAGE= TEST PREP SCORE
Homework10 HOMEWORK PERCENTAGE= HOMEWORK SCORE
Activities10 ACTIVITIES PERCENTAGE= ACTIVITIES SCORE
Exam 121 EXAM 1 PERCENTAGE= EXAM 1 SCORE
Exam 221 EXAM 2 PERCENTAGE= EXAM 2 SCORE
Final Exam36 FINAL EXAM PERCENTAGE= FINAL EXAM SCORE
TOTAL100= TOTAL OUT OF 100

COURSE PERCENTAGE = TOTAL

This is the percentage that I look for on the grade scale to give your grade. The department expects a median grade of 2.9 for this course and I am also expected to generally follow the guidelines of the faculty resource on grading. I am fairly confident that the posted gradescale will meet these grade requirements, but there may be a curve as necessary to meet these requirements based on class exam statistics (that means the gradescale may be adjusted slightly after each exam).

Specific Notes:

TEST PREP: If you miss one test prep day, you still received full test prep credit. Missing more than this, will lose you points in increments of 0.5.

HOMEWORK AND ACTIVITIES: For homework and activities, we eliminate your lowest scores (leaving 6 homework scores and 6 activity scores) and divide by the total number of points (90 for homework and 120 for activities) to get:

HOMEWORK PERCENTAGE = (HIGHEST 6 HOMEWORK SCORES) / 90 * 100 PERCENT

ACTIVITIES PERCENTAGE = (HIGHEST 6 ACTIVITY SCORES) / 120 * 100 PERCENT

EXAMS: The midterms will have 50 points on them and the final will have 100 points so to get the percentages we compute:

MIDTERM EXAM PERCENTAGE = (EXAM SCORE) / 50 * 100 PERCENT

FINAL EXAM PERCENTAGE = (EXAM SCORE)/100 * 100 PERCENT
