Worksheets and other quiz section activities. Every quiz section in which there is no quiz, you will do a worksheet or some other activity specified by your TA, usually in small groups. Each group will hand in some written work, as instructed by the TA. This written work will be graded on a scale of 0-2 points. At most 20 points will count towards your course grade, and there will be about 15 quiz sections where you may earn them. Thus there will be no makeups for missed quiz sections. If you believe this policy treats your circumstances unfairly, see Professor Arms (not your TA).
Important comment on group work. The goal of group work is for everyone in the group to learn about the material by asking questions, trying different approaches, explaining reasoning, etc. It is always more important that everyone understand what the group has done than that the worksheet be "finished." (Worksheets often include extra material that we don't expect everyone to get to, so the groups who finish the basics have something useful to work on.) If you think you know how to do the problem, help your groupmates work through the ideas, don't just do it for them. Explaining math to someone else always helps reinforce your understanding. Sometimes it reveals gaps in your thought process you didn't know were there! If your group has to spend extra time exploring an issue, note this on the sheet you hand in. Grading of the worksheets and activities will be based on evidence that you were productively engaged and making reasonable progress throughout the class.Quizzes. The topics covered on the four quizzes (see dates above) will be announced in class and on the course homepage. Each quiz will be 20 points. There will be no makeups for missed quizzes, because only your best 3 quizzes will count towards your course grade. If you believe this policy treats your circumstances unfairly, see Professor Arms (not your TA).
Calculators on tests and quizzes. We will write test and quiz problems that we think you should be able to do without using a calculator. If you wish, you may use a non-graphing calculator (that is, one with only a one-line display) on tests and quizzes.
