Information about Grades for Math 324A, Autumn 2011

Course grades will be based on a total of 300 course points:
100 points on the final exam;
55 points on each of two midterms, tentatively scheduled for Oct. 19 and Nov. 18;
40 points for quizzes; and
50 course points for homework.
(See comment below on course versus homework points below.)

Quizzes. Each 10 to 15 minute quiz will be 10 points. Your best 4 quiz scores will count towards your course grade. There will be at least 5 quizzes, probably on Wednesdays. The first two quizzes will be on Wednesday, Oct. 5, and Wednesday, Oct. 12.

Homework. The homework assignments, graded by WebAssign, will have varying numbers of homework points, which will be added up through the quarter. If you earn 95% of the total of homework points for the quarter, you will get the full 50 course points for homework, and proportionately for lower totals.

The conversion scale from points to grades will be set at the end of the quarter. My preliminary estimate is that the scale will be linear with 280 points the minimum for a 4.0, and 200 points the minimum for a 2.0. The actual scale will be no tougher that this preliminary estimate; that is, your course grade will be at least at good as the scale above indicates. More information about the grade scale will be posted here as it becomes available.
