Information about Grades for Math 326A, Spring, 2013

Course grades will be based on a total of 300 course points:
100 points on the final exam;
60 points on each midterm (4/26 and 5/22);
10 points for in-class activities; and
70 course points for homework. (See comment below on course versus homework points below.)

In-class activities. Once or twice a week there will be an activity in class for which you will hand in individual or group papers. Each activity will be worth one point; reasonable performance will earn the full point, but poor performance may earn only 1/2 point. Maximum of 10 points counts for your grade; no makeups, but there will be more than 10 activities.

Homework. There will be weekly homework assignments. Seven of the assignments will be collected and graded. Important Note: The points marked on your graded homework are homework points. The homework point totals for the quarter will be rescaled so the best total in the class is 70. (This is a change, as of 5/15, in recognition that tough grading and/or unclear problems reduced the max scores on some assignments).

Please check the Catalyst GradeBook regularly. If you spot an error, bring me the graded paper. The "classwork" category is the total for the quarter (out of 10 possible for the entire quarter), and will be updated about once a week.

The conversion scale from points to grades will be set at the end of the quarter. My preliminary estimate is that the scale will be linear with 280 points (about 92%) the minimum for a 4.0, and 200 (about 67%) points the minimum for a 2.0. The actual scale will be no tougher that this preliminary estimate; that is, your course grade will be at least at good as the preliminary scale indicates. Improved performance on the final exam (compared to the rest of the quarter) also will be considered.
