Writing on "The Optimization Principle," see Homework details page.
You'll need to use the spreadsheet program "Excel" for HW 8.
HW 8 2/2 §3.3 (pp. 131-136). Write out your answers to Questions 1, 2, & 4 on pp. 137-141. Here's the spreadsheet of data for question 1: cargraph1.xls.
Writing on different kinds of differences postponed to HW 9.
Suggestion: You can warm up on using Excel by duplicating the "tossed ball" work pp. 135-136, using the data in tossedball.xls.
HW 9 2/7 §3.4 (pp. 141-155). The homework (parts A, B, C, and D) is on the Corrected Handout from class on 2/2 (corrected to include part D). Here's the spreadsheet of data for question 6 on pp. 140-141: FreakyFantasy
HW 10 2/9 §3.5, pp. 158-168. Do Q. 7, p. 130 again if I wrote "redo" or "wrong question" on your paper.
Write out your answers to Questions 1 & 2*. pp. 155-156.
Write out your answers to Questions 1, 5, & 6**, pp. 168-69.
Think about Question 2, p. 168, to prepare for class discussion of it.
*In Q. 2, I would say that you are "illustrating" the theorems with examples rather than proving them, but with arguments that would generalize. The instruction "as few words as possible" really means "make all your arguments as visual as possible, using graphs and descriptions of operations on graphs." Do write in complete sentences, and use as many words as needed to make your ideas about the graphs clear.
**In Q. 6, the last sentence means this is similar to the previous question, you can also think of a motion context to help you figure it out.
HW 11 2/14 §§4.1-4.2, and start §4.3: try to get to about p. 192. Write out your answers to Questions 1a-e, 2, & 3 on pages 180-184. Also Think through Question 4, for class discussion. Please email me any observations about groups that might be relevant to shuffling the groups for Monday; your preferences, effects of group size, etc.
HW 12 2/16 §4.3, pp.187-199. Redo* Q5, p. 169, and submit both your original from HW 10 and your new version.
Write out your answers to Q1 & 2, pp. 199-201. Leave room for notes you may take during class discussion of these on Wednesday.
*If you missed class, see me to get your HW 10 back and discuss Q6 before you redo Q5.
2/21 Holiday, no class; BUT ===> Caution: §4.4 is long, don't wait until after the holiday weekend to start HW 13 (to be posted by 2/17).
HW 13 2/23 §4.4, pp.204-225. Write out your answers for the following: §4.2, Q *3cd & 4acde (pp. 183-184);
§4.3, Q4abc & Q5ac (pp. 201-202), plus a question on the Homework details page.
§4.4, all parts of both Q1 & Q3 (pp. 225-226).
*Showing geometric reasoning; some of you can just paste in what you did for HW 11, but most of you need to write more or different reasoning.
HW 14 2/28 §§5.1-5.4*, pp.235-255. §4.4, Q 2, 4, 6, & 12**(pp.226-233).
Note addition of Q2 and extra 12d question, also Q10 deleted from list I posted Wednesday.
*Read at least the first couple of sections carefully, and look over the rest. For class discussion, I'll call on people randomly to give opinions and recall ideas from these sections.
**In 12d, find both where L - K is a maximum and where the graphs are further apart.
HW 15 3/2 through at least p. 264 of §5.5 §5.4, Q2,4a, & 7, pp. 256-258. The idea here is mainly to get the "symbolic successive rate" (expression still including h). Then we also note what results if if we argue like Newton that some terms can be ignored if h is small enough. (That is, only intuitive limits, since we haven't justified really taking limits.)
HW 16 3/7 §§5.5 & 5.6 Do a revised version of §4.4, Q6 (p. 228), as decribed on the Homework details page;
§5.4, Q1 (calculations for x5 and answer question at top of p. 256), 8, & 9a.
§5.5, *Q1ab (think about c for class discussion) & 2.
Handwritten OK because of heavy use of notation; if you find yourself writing a paragraph, however, it would be nice if you typed that part.
*I've put some comments on §5.5 on the Homework details page which you may find helpful for Q1 in that section.
HW 17 3/9 Finish the book. §5.5, Q3*, pp. 269-270;
§5.6, Q1*, pp. 276-277.
Think about Q2: I hope we will do this one in groups in class.
Some important TYPO CORRECTIONS mentioned in Monday's class can be found in the pdf of the class.
*In 3c and 1b, you may use h = 0.1, if you use a spreadsheet, or h = 1/3, if you do the graphing by hand. In either case, graph carefully and explain clearly and in detail.
3/11 Synthesis paper due at Math 421 dropbox. If you need an extension of a few days, just email me no later than 3/11 saying when you will submit the paper. Extensions to the weekend or Monday, 3/14, granted automatically; for longer extensions please ask for approval.
HW 18 3/14
Note class this date is for full exam period, 4:30-6:20.
Write out your answers §5.7, Q1, 2, 3*, & 4 (pp. 284-286). MUST BE TURNED IN AT START OF CLASS ON 3/14! May be handwritten or typed.
*Q3 is multiple choice. You may just list your answers without explaining your reasoning, but be prepared to defend your choices in class discussion.
Look carefully at the dates above! Assignments for the REST OF THE QUARTER posted above.
