Current Announcements. [Date posted.]
- Warning: Math department servers sometimes go down for a few
hours in the afternoon or evening. Don't wait for the last minute to look up
assignments and other information you need.
- [3/29] In the first class yesterday we went over the information on
the website, and started on the course as indicated in these
transparencies.
I've added a "Handouts" page (link below). In addition to pdfs of the
class handouts (e.g., Chapter 1 assignments handed out yesterday),
this page will have other useful files (e.g., a review of proof
techniques I just posted there).
- [4/5] In class tomorrow I'll give you a hard copy of
Chapter 2 Assignments, part I.
- [4/11]
Transparencies from class today.
- [4/26]
Chapter 3 assignments. Groupwork yesterday (Monday): (1) Let f(x) = 1
on [0,0.5] and f(x) = 2 on (0.5,1]. Compute the lower lower and upper sums
L(n) and U(n) for n = 1,2,3,4,5 for the area under the graph of f.
(Be sure to note f(0.5) = 1, not 2.) What do you observe about the pattern of
each sequence, and the relation of L(n) and U(n)? (2) Make a list of the key
steps in Section 2.8. To make up absence Monday, do these two activities and
see me to discuss.
