Information about Grades for Math 427, Autumn 2012

Course grades will be based on a total of 300 course points:

*Total homework scores for the quarter will be rescaled so that a perfect total for the quarter is 65 points. Thus a point on a homework assignment is not equal to a course point.

The conversion scale from points to grades will be set at the end of the quarter. My preliminary estimate is that the scale will be linear with 280 points the minimum for a 4.0, and 200 points the minimum for a 2.0. The actual scale will be no tougher that this preliminary estimate; that is, your course grade will be at least at good as the preliminary scale indicates.
Adjustment on 11/9: The strictness of grading on homework, quiz, and midterm suggests the minimums above need to be lowered. The minimum for a 4.0 may be lowered to about 275 (~92%), and the minimum for a 2.0 will be lowered, probably to about 180 (60%).
The grades computed using the actual scale may be adjusted slightly upward for performance trend through the quarter or extra credit (if any is offered).
