Title Beyond Fourier: Some Analysis Inspired by Signal and Image Processing
Date May 8 4:00pm PDL C-36
Fourier series and Fourier transforms, which represent general functions as superpositions of waves of definite frequencies, have long been a fundamental tool of analysis. However, in the last two decades, there has been a lot of work on synthesizing general functions out of basic functions that are well localized in both time (or space) and frequency: wavelets, Gabor systems, etc. We will survey some of these methods, which are both theoretically interesting and highly applicable in modern information technology.
