Math 170 Homework and Announcements

Project Due Dates:

See project page and p. 2 in the Packet for more details.

Homework for Thursday, March 30:

  • Write up a brief mathematical autobiography. I am especially interested to learn your goals in taking this class and what you hope to achieve by the end of this quarter. It would also be useful to learn what your thoughts are toward mathematics at this point and, insofar as you can trace them, how you arrived at them.
  • Complete Homework 1, handed out in class.
  • Solution to the vending machine problem.

    Classwork on Thursday, March 30:

  • Worksheet 2.

    Homework for Monday, April 3:

  • Read the Preface and Sections 1.1 through 1.4 (pages 1 - 27) of Chapter 1 of the textbook and write out thoughts or comments or partial solutions or guesses or whatever he calls for at each of the marked spots. Then turn in what you wrote. You will NOT be graded on whether you wrote the "right" thing (there generally isn't one) but on whether you wrote something indicating that you were putting some thought into the relevant issue.
Note: The Bassarear textbook is set up with a specific model in mind of how you should read it. Every few paragraphs there is a little pencil and notepad symbol, and when you get to one of them you are supposed to write something on a scratch pad before you go on. This is an admirable format, but one that it can be difficult to persuade oneself to follow through on.
  • On pages 28 and 29 of the textbook, do problems 1, 2, 4, 10, 12, 18, and 20.
  • Selected homework solutions here and here.

    Homework for Thursday, April 6:

  • On pages 28-30, do problems 21a, 31, and 38.
  • Among problems 21-40, choose 2 more problems that you think are interesting and offer you a challenge. Try to solve them. If you succeed, write up your answer. If you get stuck, write up what you figured out and why you can't go any further.
  • Selected homework solutions here.

    Classwork on April 3 & 6:

  • Worksheet 3 & Solutions

    Homework for Monday, April 10:

  • Actively read sections 1.5-1.7 in the text.
  • Do problem B on page 6 of the notes (the page is labeled Problem Solving Session). If your group did this in class, write up a clear solution. The solution should look familiar. That is, we've seen the solution before in class. Explain why this is so.
  • Bee problem solution here.

    Homework for Thursday, April 13:

  • On pages 53-57 of the text, do problems 4,9,13,20,31, and 34.
  • Problem 9 solutions here.
  • Frog problem (#13) page 1, page 2, and page 3 and problem 31.

    Homework for Monday, April 17:

  • If you did not finish Problem Set 1 from the Notes in class, finish it for homework.
  • Do Problem Set 2 from the notes, pages 13-15.

    Homework for Thursday, April 20:

  • No homework. Study for the test on Thursday!

    Homework for Monday, April 24:

  • In chapter 1 of the book you would have seen many references to the NCTM curriculum standards. This important document has recently been edited and re-issued and its current title is Principles and Standards for School Mathematics. A portion of it is reproduced in the notes that you have for this class (roughly the last 3/4th of the notes). Your assignment is to read this document. After you have absorbed it, please type up a one page report with your reactions to this document. This is not supposed to reproduce the material from the document, but should rather explain your reactions to it. In particular, you could talk about how this relates to how you learned math in school, how you might teach with these guidelines, what parts you are excited about, what parts you are not, etc. This assignment will be due Thursday, April 27th.

    Classwork for Monday, April 24:
