Math 170 Project Descriptions and Deadlines
PROJECT DUE DATES:
Project 1, first turn-in no later than Monday, May 8th.
Project 2, due Monday, May 15.
Project 1, final turn-in: Thursday, June 1.
Details.
Project 1, first turn-in no later than Monday, May 8.
Option A (tutoring): turn in your journal
after at least three tutoring sessions for me to read, comment on, and return.
I will aim to return your journal at the next class.
Option B (Math Fair):
turn in your journal on May 8th with two entries after going to Thoroughgood Marshall Elementary School twice. For more information, see the first page of the notes or look here or at the Math Fair homepage.
Option C (Lesson Plan):Click here for the specifics.
Turn in a draft for your presentation no later than May 8th.
Project 1, final turn-in no later than Thursday, June 1.
For Options A & B:
Please include the entries, with my comments and any replies you wanted
to make to my comments, from your first turn-in. Also include the
"final entry" described on p. 1 in the packet (second paragraph under
"3. Keep a journal."). I realize that for Option B, the Math Fair is the night of June 1. You are still required to attend. If you would like to keep your journal and turn it in the day of the final, let me know and I will accept it then.
For Option C:
See specifics above for what to turn in.
Project 2, due Monday, May 15.
Option A: For this project, you should read the book Fear of Math
("FoM" for short), and write a one page paper responding to questions the following questions.
Projects should be word-processed or typed, not handwritten.
In FoM, Zaslavsky describes many sources of fear of mathematics.
Imagine that with a wave of a magic wand, I could institute in all schools
all of the changes proposed in the NCTM Standards. This would eliminate
some of the sources of fear Zaslavsky describes, but not others.
- Identify one source of fear that you think would be eliminated.
Give a specific page reference in FoM for this cause of fear.
Explain why you think it would disappear, possibly
with specific references to the Standards. Answer in at most half a page.
- Identify one source of fear that you think would not be
eliminated. Give a specific page reference in FoM for this cause of fear.
Explain why you think it would not disappear. Answer in at most half a page.
Option B: This project requires you to read one of the following articles and then create a short lecture on the material that will be appropriate for the class(about 2-4 pages). This assignment is to be done individually.
I would like you to read any one article from the 4 volume series "World of Mathematics" by James R. Newman. I have these on reserve in the Math Library (Padelford C-wing, 3rd floor). Almost all the articles are written for non-mathematicians and should provide you with some fun facts about mathematics. You may also be able to find some of these articles on the web.
