Mathematics Study Center: The MSC will be providing services for students in Math 120 and 124/5/6 ONLY. Fall hours are

Sundays: 2:00pm -- 6:00pm

The MSC is located in B14 Comm, directly below A&S advising.
The MSC is not a tutoring center in the traditional sense. The MSC provides a comfortable place for students to come together and study, in groups or individually. There are a number of tutors (both graduate student TA's and advanced undergraduates) on staff who will sit down with students to help them get unstuck or to answer questions. The MSC does not provide long blocks of uninterrupted one-on-one tutoring. Textbooks, calculators and other study materials are available to be checked out for in-room use.
Math 187 Computer Lab: In this lab students work Math 126 problems by observing and manipulating lines, curves, planes, and surfaces plotted by the computer. The lab is optional. It is open only to students concurrently enrolled in Math 126. Enrolment is limited, and registration is on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Grading:
- Quizzes: There are 8 15--minute quizzes each worth 50 points. The quizzes are given each Thursday except Oct. 23, Nov. 20, and Nov. 27. There will also be a quiz on Nov. 25. The quizzes cover the homework of the previous week. A more precise description of the content of the quiz will be announced the Monday before the quiz. Only the top 6 of your quiz scores count toward your grade.
- Midterms: There are two midterms: Wednesday, October 22 and Friday, November 21. The first midterm covers the material from Part I of the notes while the second covers the material from Part II. Each midterm is worth 200 points. Sample midterms will be given before each exam.
- Final Exam: The combined final exam will be given on Saturday, December 13 between 1:30 and 4:40pm. The location of the combined final exam will be announced at a later date. The final exam is comprehensive and covers all of the material in the course notes. The final exam is worth 300 points. Professional Copy `n' Print also sells copies of past 126 final exams.
- Final Grade: The total number of possible points is 1000:
  
  300 quiz points $+$ 400 midterm points $+$ 300 final exam points $=$ 1000 points.
  
  Your final grade will be based on these points. One class curve is computed after the final exam has been scored.
- Incomplete: A grade of Incomplete will be given only if a student is doing satisfactory work up until the end of the quarter, and then misses the final exam due to a documented medical or family emergency.
Exams:
- Calculators: Calculators are not allowed in quizzes, midterm exams, or on the final exam.
- Time Conflicts with an Exam: There will be no make-up exam except in the case of a documented emergency. In the event of an unavoidable conflict with a midterm (an athletic meet, wedding, funeral, etc...), you must notify me at least 1.5 weeks before the date of the exam so that we can arrange for you to take the exam BEFORE the actual exam date. In the event of an unavoidable conflict with the final exam, you will need to submit a written petition for this purpose to Brooke Miller or Julie Martinson by Monday, December 1.
Overloads: The only way to enroll in this class is through STAR. I do not hand out entry codes and do not sign overloads.

- Quiz Dates: Oct. 2, 9, 16, 30. Nov. 6, 13, 25. Dec. 4.
- Midterm Dates: Wednesday, October 22. Friday, November 21.
- Final Exam: Friday, December 13, 1:30--4:30pm.
Studying: I anticipate that you will need to spend at least 10 hours a week studying for this course in addition to the time spent in class. In this regard, it is advised that you become familiar with the services of the MATHEMATICS STUDY CENTER at your earliest convenience. In addition, it is advised that you form study groups as soon as possible. Study groups have several advantages: (i) you can practice and learn how to solve more problems in less time (doing as many problems as possible is the key to success), (ii) the best way to really learn something is to explain it to someone else (misunderstandings that you never knew you had come to light under someone else's questioning), (iii) no two people solve the same problem the same way, in a group you may discover new and more efficient ways to solve the same problem, (iv) seeing that others also struggle with this material helps to put your own level of understanding in a better perspective and will hopefully reduce some of your anxiety, (v) the course is designed with the assumption that you will be working in groups.
