Syllabus
Math 307, Section E, Introduction to Differential Equations, is the first course in the 307-308-309 sequence offerend by the Mathematics department.
- Time schedule and location
- There are no quiz sections. Lectures are
MWF, 11:30-12:20, in JHN 175;
- Instructor
- Instructor: Chris Jordan-Squire
Office: Padelford Hall, C-8G
E-mail: cAjBoCrDdEan1 "at" uw "dot" edu (Remove ABCDE)
- Textbooks
- The course textbook is Elementary Differential Equations and BVP (9th edition, 8th OK), by Boyce and DiPrima
- If you are using the 8th edition, check this
list of differences between the 2 editions regularly
(thanks to Hart Smith for the list).
- Office hours
- As written above, office hours are W immediately after class.
- Homework
- Homework will usually be collected on Friday.
Homework should be NEAT and EASY TO UNDERSTAND. In addition, you must SHOW ALL WORK.
LATE HOMEWORK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.
Since there are no quiz sections, you should think of the homework as the equivalent. Doing the homework - making your hands dirty with computations - is as important as studying. Keep in mind that the homework is assigned to help you understand the material. If you feel that you do not fully understand a concept, you should try more exercises, even if they are unassigned.
Beware that the homework on the calendar can change (up to a week before its due day), so that you should keep checking.
- Quizzes
- During the quarter, there will be four quizzes. The first quiz will be a review quiz on the first Friday. The specific dates for the quizzes are on Schedule.
- Exams
- There will be one midterm and one final exam. All exams will only be on materials we have seen in the lectures (unless otherwise stated).
There are NO MAKE-UP EXAMS. If you have a compelling, unavoidable, and well-documented reason for missing an exam, talk with me as soon as possible.
For all exams, you can bring a scientific calculator, but NOT a graphing calculator. One handwritten sheet of notes is also allowed (two-sided). And remember to bring your student ID.
The midterm will be on Friday May 3, in class.
The final is cumulative. The final will be Wednesday, June 12th, 2:30-4:20, in our usual classroom.
- Grades
- The final grade will be based on homework, quizzes and exams, weighted as follows:
| Homework | 10% |
| Quiz1 | 6% |
| Quiz2 | 8% |
| Quiz3 | 8% |
| Quiz4 | 8% |
| Midterm | 25% |
| Final | 35% |
