ABSTRACT

The orthogonal group acts naturally on the flag variety for the complex general linear group with finitely many orbits. We give a partial characterization of the orbits with smooth, or rationally smooth, closure via a pattern avoidance criterion on the involutions that parametrize the orbits. We will find that there are many similarities but also important and interesting differences from known avoidance criteria for other geometric properties.
