Assignments and Announcements for Math 308E
March 30 We finished Section 1.1 today and began 1.2. You
should now be able to do all the Section 1.1 Webassign exercises. On
Friday, I hope to finish Section 1.2.
April 1: We just about finished Section 1.2 today. You should
now be able to do the rest of the Webassign homework due next Thursday
with the posssible exception of the last few True/False problems from
1.2. (Please note: We will not be covering Section 1.3, and Section
1.4 will not be discussed in class. You are only responsible for the
kind of word problems in your homework; you needn't worry about
balancing chemical equations or traffic flow for example.) On Monday,
we will move on to Section 2.1.
April 4: We finished up Chapter 1 today, and you should now be
able to do all of the Webassign problems due on 4/7. We also covered
Section 2.1 today, although I forgot to define "linear combination".
Once you know this definition, you should be able to now do all of the
Webassign Section 2.1 problems. (I have posted the Section 2.1 and
Section 2.2 problems; the Section 2.3 problems will be posted in a few
days and will be due a little later.) On Wednesday, we will move on
to Section 2.2.
April 6: We discussed Section 2.2 today. We will finish with
that on Friday and then move on to Section 2.3.
April 8: We finished Section 2.2 and you should now be able to
complete your Webassign homework. We will start Section 2.3 on
Monday.
April 11: We began Section 2.3 today and should finish it on
Wednesday. I have posted your Section 2.3 Webassign homework, and
that will be due on April 18. The test on April 20 will cover up
through Section 2.3.
April 13: We almost finished Section 2.3 today. You should now be
able to do all the Section 2.3 Webassign problems with the possible
exception of #7. We will certainly finish 2.3 on Friday and move on
to Section 3.1.
April 15: We finished Section 2.3 and began Section 3.1. On
Monday I will answer questions about the material in the first two
chapters. We will continue with 3.1 if there's time.
April 22: We pretty much finished Section 3.1, and you should
now be able to do all the Section 3.1 Webassign problems. I will do
an example on Monday, and then we will move on to Section 3.2.
April 25: We began Section 3.2 today, and I expect to finish it
on Wednesday.
April 27: We finished Section 3.2, and you should now be able
to do all of the Section 3.2 Webassign problems. On Friday we will
move on to Section 3.3.
April 29: We began Section 3.3 and will finish it on Monday. We
will then move on to Chapter 4.
May 2: We finished Section 3.3, so you should now be able to do
all of the Webassign problems from that section. We then moved on to
Section 4.1 and will continue with that on Wednesday.
May 4: We finished Section 4.1 and will begin Section 4.2 on
Friday. You should be able to do all of the Section 4.1 Webassign problems.
May 6: We began Section 4.2, and you shouuld now be able to do
problems 1-3, 7-11, and 17-30 on your Section 4.2 Webassign. I hope to
finish Sections 4.2 and 4.3 on Monday.
May 9: We finished Section 4.2 and almost finished Section 4.3;
we only need to discuss the Rank + Nullity Theorem. You might want to
read this in your book now, since we have just about proved it. You
should nevertheless be able to do all of the Section 4.2 Webassign
problems and all of the Section 4.3 Webassign problems except for
problems 6,8, and 10. On Wednesday we will discuss the Rank + Nullity
Theorem and review for the midterm.
May 16: We covered most of Section 5.1, and I will discuss the
determinant of triangular matrices on Wednesday. You should be able
to now do all of the Section 5.1 Webassign problems execpt for problems 6 and 16.
I will then move on to Section 6.1.
May 18: We finished Section 5.1; you should now be able to do
all of the Webassign problems from that section. We also began in on
Section 6.1 and will finish that on Friday. We will then move on to
Section 6.3.
May 20: We finished Section 6.1 and began Section 6.3. We will
finish 6.3 on Monday and perhaps begin Section 8.1. You should now be
able to do all of the Section 6.1 Webassign problems.
May 23: We finished Section 6.3 and began Section 8.1; you should now be able to
do all of the Webassign problems due Thursday. On Wednesday, we will
finish Section 8.1 and begin 8.2.
May 25: We pretty much finished Section 8.1. On Friday we will
move on to Sections 8.2 and 8.5 (not 8.3 as I posted in my now
corrected announcement from May 23.)
May 27: We finished Section 8.1 anad got part way through 8.2.
However, you now know enough to do all of the Section 8.1 and Section
8.2 Webassign problems. I also suggest you do Exercise 75 from 8.1
and Exercise 59 from 8.2 of your text. (You know enough to do
Exercise 75 now.) On Wednesday, we will finish 8.2 - and you will be
able to do Exercise 59 - and move on to 8.5.
June 3: The final exam is on Wednesday, June 8 from
2:30-4:20. Books, notes, and calculators will not be allowed. I
will, however, be providing you with a page containing Theorem 6.11,
Definitions 8.13 and 8.15, and Theorem 8.17. These will be stated
exactly as they are in your book - I will just be photocopying them
and placing them on the same page. I will have a special office hour
on Monday from 3:30-4:30. (If you have a final at that time and let
me know ahead of time that you want to come by, I can probably stay later.)
