Textbook and Webassign

Your homework assignments will be on webassign. Always login to webassign with your UWnetID and password.

You have to purchase webassign within the first two weeks of the course. When you get your textbook for Math 111at the bookstore which comes with webassign, follow the directions in the envelope. It is a two step process: you first use the code on the paper to get a webassign access code, then you enter that code to webassign.  Here are step by step directions with some screenshots to help you through the process. If you buy webassign from the online link in webassign it may be more expensive. If you need any help see the calendar below for webassign help.

Webassign comes with an electronic version of the textbook Mathematical Applications for the Management, Life, and Social Sciences, twelfth edition, by Harshbarger and Reynolds so you don’t have to have your hard copy with you always. Math 111 covers chapters 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6; Math 112 covers Chapters 9-14.

During the first three weeks of Math 111, we will follow the supplementary reading on graphical techniques. In the schedule below I refer to it as the Supplement.

Grading

There will be two midterms, one final exam, quizzes, activities and homework assignments. The final is 30%, midterms are 24% each, the homework assignments are 10%, the quizzes are 8% and the activities are 4% of your grade. Late homework is not accepted. There are no make ups for activities, quizzes or midterms. I will drop your lowest activity and quiz scores. If you miss a midterm exam, you have to talk to me personally as soon as you return to campus. You can follow your homework scores in Webassign and the rest of your grades from catalyst

More

On the exams and the quizzes, you can only use a TI 30X IIS calculator. You can get it in any color you want. You can bring a handwritten 8 ½ by 11 (regular notebook size) sheet of notes to the exams. Single sided for the midterms, double sided for the final. You will also need a clear plastic ruler to use in class and on exams.

You can see the lecture topics, quizzes, activities, homework assignments and exams in the schedule below. You can also follow your homework schedule on Webassign. Homework assignments will be visible eight days before they are due. You have homework due MWF nights on most weeks, about two and a half days after the relevant lecture. In the quiz sections, after the quiz, there will be a discussion on the homework assignment due soon. Try to get as much of your homework done before you go to your quiz section. If you miss a lecture, read what you missed from the Supplement or the textbook.
