There will be someone to answer your questions at the Math Study Center Mondays and Wednesdays between 1:30-4:30 and Tuesdays and Thursdays between 12:30-4:30.

For the times and places of the sections see the schedule. I will not overload this course. If you want to register but there is no space, check online frequently to see if space opens up. Also, see the FAQ on the Math Department website.

Textbook and Webassign

During the first three weeks of Math 111, we will follow the supplementary reading on graphical techniques. In the schedule below I refer to it as the Supplement.

The remainder of Math 111 and all of Math 112 follow Mathematical Applications for the Management, Life, and Social Sciences, tenth edition, by Harshbarger and Reynolds.  You may purchase a less expensive, custom, loose-leaf version of the text, listed as Applied Mathematics for Business at the University Book Store.  The custom version comes bundled with Webassign access.  Math 111 covers chapters 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6; Math 112 covers Chapters 9-14. You are not required to purchase a hard copy of the text. You can purchase an electronic copy of the text, along with access to Webassign through this link for $65. This is the only way to get the UW price of $65 for two quarters of Webassign and the electronic copy of the text. Sections 1.1 - 6.5 refer to this textbook in the schedule below.

Whether you use the hard copy or electronic copy of the text, you must have a Webassign access code for your homework assignments. Webassign offers a two-week grace period during which you may access your homework without entering an access code. An access code purchased with the custom text from the bookstore or through the Cengage link above. The access code will work for both Math 111 and Math 112. Do not follow any links in Webassign to purchase the text---those links will not offer the $65 access. Here is some information on how to use Webassign

Grading

There will be two midterms, one final exam, quizzes, activities and homework assignments. The final is 30%, midterms are 24% each, the homework assignments are 10%, the quizzes are 8% and the activities are 4% of your grade. Late homework is not accepted. There are no make ups for activities or quizzes unless you are travelling with a UW team. If you miss an exam, see me as soon as possible. You can follow your homework scores in Webassign and the rest of your grades from catalyst.

General

On the exams and the quizzes you can use a scientific calculator. You calculators should not have any symbolic calculation capabilities- they should not be able solve equations. You can bring a handwritten sheet of notes to the exams. Single sided for the midterms, double sided for the final. You will also need a clear plastic ruler to use in class and on exams.

For the first three weeks, we will be working on graphs. PRINT THIS and bring it to every lecture. You also need to PRINT THE ACTIVITIES and bring them to your quiz sections. The TAs will not have copies for you.

You can see the lecture topics, quizzes, activities and exams in the schedule bellow. You can follow your homework schedule on Webassign. Homework assignments will be visible eight days before they are due. You have homework due Tuesday and Thursday nights on most weeks. In the quiz sections, after the activity or the quiz, there will be a discussion on the homework assignment due that night. Try to get as much of your homework done before you go to your quiz section.

Quiz on Supplement 1-3

Solutions

·         First homework assignment is due this week on Tuesday. Some questions require you to print and work on graphs. You can print them one by one as you go along in Webassign or all at once from here. For better results from your graphs, use a sharp pencil and use points further apart for slope computations.

·         Here is the rest of the Three Languages lecture from Wednesday. First, try to finish it on your own and the compare your answers with mine.

·         I told the story of the use of x in mathematics in Section C. Here is a video of the story. I also suggested that you can get a geodreieck if you are having trouble drawing parallel lines. Apparently they are not sold in the US. So we are stuck with our ordinary clear rulers. Craving Pumpkin Cupcakes?
