Text: Elementary Differential Equations and Boundary Value Problems
(8th edition), by Boyce and DiPrima. We will cover (most of) Chapters 1, 2, 3,
and 6.
Exams, Homework, Grades: There will be two midterm exams and a final exam.
The First Midterm will be Friday, January 26, covering
the material on the first three homework assignments.
The Second Midterm will be Friday, February 23, covering Chapter 3.
The Final Exam will be Wednesday, March 14,
8:30-10:20 a.m. You can bring a page of notes and a non-graphing calculator,
but not a graphic calculator, to each exam. (You won't really need a
calculator at all.)
There will also be weekly homework assignments, which will be posted here.
Course grades will be computed on the following basis: Homework 10%,
Midterms 25% each, Final exam 40%.
Solutions to First Midterm Exam
Solutions to Second Midterm Exam. In the final answer
to problem 2a, the term -2e^{-3t} was inadvertently omitted.
Assignments:
- Due Wednesday, January 10:
- Section 1.1: 1, 3, 15, 16
- Section 1.3: 1-4 (You don't have to hand these in; they're just to see if you

- Misc. Problems on p.131: 1, 6, 8, 22, 24 (Note: These differential equations are
all of the kinds we have studied earlier, though you may have to manipulate them a
little to put them into a familiar form. Some of the other equations on this list are
of types that we haven't considered, such as the "exact" equations discussed in
section 2.6 and the "homogeneous" equations discussed on page 49.)
