TEXT: Abstract Algebra: Theory and Applications,    Thomas W. Judson.

GRADING: The grade will be based on the homework assignments (which count 15% altogether), the midterm (which counts 35%), and the final (which counts 50%). The midterm will be on Friday, November 1st. The final will be on Wednesday, December 11th, 8:30 - 10:20 AM.

Math 402 is an introduction to group theory. We will cover most of chapters 3,4,5,6,9,10,11 and a few topics from chapters 12,13,14, 15 in the text. A significant part of the course will be the theoretical side of group theory - various theorems about the properties of groups, either general groups or special types of groups. But another significant part of the course will be studying and getting to know specific groups. Both are crucial for gaining an understanding of group theory.
