TEXT: Abstract Algebra, 3rd edition by I.N. Herstein
GRADING: The grade will be based on the homework assignments (which
count 30% altogether), the midterm (which counts 30%), and the final (which
counts 40%). The midterm will be on Friday, November 6th. The final
will be on Wednesday, December 16th, 8:30 - 10:20 .
Math 402 is an introduction to group theory. We will cover
chapters 1, 2 and 3 in the text. A significant part of the course will be the theoretical side of group theory - various theorems about the properties of
groups, either general groups or special types of groups. But another significant part of the course will be studying and getting to know specific groups. Both are crucial for gaining an understanding of group theory.
