The study of Schubert varieties and their singular points is an area of research involving an interaction of algebraic geometry, combinatorics, Lie theory and algebraic topology. Though Schubert varieties are studied for generalized flag varieties, in this talk I will focus only on the Grassmannian case. Grassmannian variety, G(k,n) is the collection of all k-dimensional subspaces of an n-dimensional vector space and Schubert varieties are a particular collection of subvarieties of G(k,n). In this talk I hope to introduce some of the background material, some beautiful results and new ideas in this research area using simple examples. The talk is aimed at a general audience and all necessary definitions will be explained.
